Tool Steel
CoxMHP uses Tool Steel and a variety of carbon or alloy tools that can be easily made into steel. They are suitable because of their hardiness, resistance to abrasion, their ability to hold an edge and their resistance to temperature change. These tools are made to a number of grades.
Mild steel has a relatively low tensile strength, but it is malleable; surface hardness can be increased through carburizing.
Manganese is usually added to increase the hardiness of low carbon steel and usually turns it into a low alloy steel. Medium carbon steel is used for forging and automotive parts because of its strength and durable wear resistance. High carbon steel is used for springs and high strength wires because its very strong. Ultra high carbon steel can be tempered to a great hardness.
The purpose of heat treating carbon steel is to change the mechanical properties of steel, usually ductility, hardness, yield strength or impact resistance.
Heat Treatments:
- Spheroidizing
- Full Annealing
- Process Annealing
- Isothermal Annealing
- Normalizing
- Quenching
- Martempering
- Austempering
